Verrazano Derby Odds
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - One of the clear-cut contenders for the 2013 Kentucky Derby is Verrazano, the race's current favorite.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Verrazano is 7/2 to win this year's Kentucky Derby. He earned 150 points this season and made $210,000 in earnings for trainer Todd Pletcher, who is won of the best in the business.
Verrazano recently won the Grade I Wood Memorial and will likely challenge Orb for first place at Churchill Downs this weekend. In fact, Verrazano has yet to lose in four career races, which include victories at the Grade II Tampa Bay Derby and the previously mentioned Wood Memorial.
At the Wood Memorial on April 6, he beat out Normandy Invasion (2nd) and Vyjack (third), two horses that will also compete at this weekend's Kentucky Derby. And at the Tampa Bay Derby, Verrazano placed ahead of second-place finisher Java's War and third-place contender Falling Sky, both of which will also compete at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
The jockey appointed to ride Verrazano is none other than 2011 Kentucky Derby winner John Velazquez, who has ridden thirteen editions of the Derby. He won the 2011 Kentucky Derby aboard Animal Kingdom.
