(TheSpread) – The LSU Tigers could be getting overlooked in the national picture. Is this the year the Tigers get back to the top?

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, LSU has been given 18/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The Tigers have also been given odds of +1250 to win the SEC Conference and a money line of +550 to win the SEC West Division. The over/under for wins for LSU has been set at 8.5.

Les Miles is in his ninth season as head coach of the Tigers and he is coming off a 10-3 record in 2012, his third-lowest win total in a season as head coach at LSU. This year’s team returns 12 starters and should once again be a top contender in the SEC.

The Tigers aren’t known for being an offensive power, but they have eight starters back from a group that averaged 29.8 points and 374 yards per game a year ago. The offense will be led by senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who threw for 2,609 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Mettenberger has his top four receiving targets back this season as well and will have sophomore running back Jeremy Hill to hand the ball to. Hill nearly lost his spot on the team after some issues with the law during the offseason, but he has been welcomed back by the team. Hill rushed for 755 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012.

On defense, LSU allowed just 17.5 points and 308 yards per ga5me in 2012. This year’s defense has just four starters back, but the Tigers have always had good depth on defense. Leading the unit will be senior linebacker Lamin Barrow, who had 104 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss last season. The Tigers do lose a lot from the front seven, as they lose 26.5 sacks from their 35 sacks as a team in 2012. Finding a consistent pass rush will be a big key to the season.

LSU has had at least nine wins in all but one season under Miles. The Tigers could contend for it all if it can get past the strenuous SEC schedule. LSU opens the year against TCU at Cowboys Stadium before playing a pair of lighter games. The SEC schedule features home games with Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M and Arkansas. Road trips include Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama. The Tigers have a week off prior to and after meeting with Alabama, so clearly that game has a lot of emphasis. It’s hard to see LSU running the table, but it may just need to find a way to win the SEC to play for the BCS title.
