(TheSpread) – The South Carolina Gamecocks may have the best player in college football, but do they have what it takes to win it all?

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, South Carolina has been given 18/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The Gamecocks have also been given odds of +450 to win the SEC Conference and a money line of +200 to win the SEC East Division. The over/under for wins for South Carolina has been set at 9.5.

Steve Spurrier is now in his ninth season as head coach and coming off back-to-back 11-2 seasons with South Carolina. The Gamecocks seem to be built to contend for the SEC title, but they never seem to be able to get over the hump. This year’s team has 13 starters back from a year ago.

South Carolina has always been a defensive team under Spurrier and this year’s squad will be no different. The defense allowed just 18.2 points and 316 yards per game a year ago while racking up 43 sacks. This year’s unit is led by arguably the top player in the country in junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who had 13 sacks and 54 tackles in 2012. Clowney is NFL ready, but hasn’t completed three years of college, so South Carolina has a ferocious pass rusher on their hands. Clowney has been given 10/1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy this year. The South Carolina defense also has three starters back in the secondary, but will need to develop some talent around Clowney in the front seven, as they have five starters to replace in the front seven.

On offense, South Carolina averaged 31.5 points and 377 yards per game in 2012. This year’s offense has seven starters back, including quarterback Connor Shaw, who threw for 1,956 yards and 17 touchdowns last season in limited action. The Gamecocks have four of their top six receivers back from a year ago, led by junior Bruce Ellington, who caught 40 passes for 600 yards and seven scores. The team will need more from the running back position this year, and that will be up to sophomore Mike Davis and a veteran offensive line. Shaw is the leading returning rusher, as he had 435 yards in 2012.

The schedule for South Carolina isn’t easy. The team opens the year at home against North Carolina and then heads to Georgia the following week. The Gamecocks also have road games with Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri while hosting Mississippi State, Florida and rival Clemson. If South Carolina stays healthy, it can win the SEC East. Especially if it can knock off Georgia in week two.
