MLB Odds and Picks - NL Central race stays hot with Cardinals-Pirates matchup
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

The final series of the season between the Pirates and Cardinals kicked off with a bang on Friday at Busch Stadium. St. Louis took the opener 12-8 and moved within one-half game of Pittsburgh atop the NL Central. If recent performances by tonight's starts are any indication, we should see plenty of runs again, and the posted total on the game is only 7.5 runs.

The Pirates (81-59) will not only be looking to avoid a third-consecutive loss and try to take advantage of these final games with St. Louis to get some separation, but also secure their first winning season since 1992. With 22 games to go, they'll eventually get there, but they don't seem to have the look of a hungry team lately. They almost look like they're fatigued and can see the finish line of the race, but have nothing left in the tank.

Their entire pitching staff has carried them all season, and the one major void from the first half of the season to now has been tonight's starter Jeff Locke, who is 0-2 with a 7.02 ERA over his past seven starts. When he made the All-Star team, Locke had an 8-2 record with a 2.15 ERA. Eight starts later, he's won only one game and his ERA has ballooned to 3.22. The Pirates have lost three of his past four starts and even briefly sent him down to Double-A Altoona to work on some things. The Pirates have gone OVER the total in his past three starts.

On the other side we have the Cardinals' ace Adam Wainwright, who is looking to avoid his third consecutive loss. In his last two starts, the Reds roughed him up like no other team has this season. On Aug. 28, Cincinnati sent him to the showers early after only two innings, pounding him for nine runs in a 10-0 home loss. On Tuesday at Cincinnati, the Reds got him again with six runs over six innings in a 7-2 loss.

Neither outing was the type of performance expected from Wainwright in such critical games. He served up three homers in those two games. The big question tonight is whether he can simply flip the switch and bounce back. Or is this the start of a similar slump like Locke has been going through?

Based on Wainwright's recent outings against Pittsburgh, chances are that he'll give up some runs. In his five most recent starts against them, he's gone 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA. We like a lot of runs to be scored again tonight, and if that happens, we also think there is some value with the Pirates to win based on Wainwright's last two starts.

Saturday's selections:

Pirates/Cardinals OVER 7.5 (-110)

Pirates (Locke) +155 at Cardinals

Tigers (Verlander) -125 at Royals

Yankees (Huff) +120 vs. Red Sox

Second-half record: 81-82 (+369)
