Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Here are two streaking and two slumping starting pitchers set to take the hill Monday:

STREAKING

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (6-1, 1.59 ERA)

Zimmermann has won three consecutive starts. In his last 24 innings pitched, the righty has allowed one earned run on ten hits, while striking out 19. But the righty hasn't fared well in his previous two starts against his next opponent – the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has a 5.25 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (3-2, 2.33 ERA)

Woods has been one of the most consistent starters in the National League this season. The lefty hasn’t surrendered more than three earned runs in each of his seven starts and will get the ball against the Rockies Monday.

SLUMPING

Marco Estrada, Milwaukee Brewers (2-2, 6.05 ERA)

The Brewers pushed Estrada’s start back to Monday against the Pirates to give him a few extra days to rest because his last two outings have been disastrous. The righty has been rocked for 13 earned runs in his last 8 1/3 innings pitched.

Justin Grimm, Texas Rangers (2-2, 3.45 ERA)

Grimm impressed in his first three outings of the season, picking up two wins and keeping his ERA to a stellar 1.59 mark. But the rookie has struggled in back-to-back starts, taking losses to the Chicago White Sox and Brewers. The righty has issued seven free passes during the losing skid. He walked only four in his previous three starts.

MLB Odds and Picks

LAS VEGAS -- It’s hard to tell which Colorado Rockies lineup will show up tonight at Wrigley Field, but there is far less mystery in what to expect from Chicago Cubs starter Travis Wood, who has been one of the more consistent pitchers in the majors.

Before Sunday’s 8-2 win at St. Louis, the Rockies had been held scoreless for 28 straight innings, something no one would have expected from a team that had been one of the most potent offenses in the league. The Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright and Shelby Miller shut them out on consecutive days on Friday and Saturday.

As for Wood (3-2, 2.33 ERA), he has seven straight quality starts to begin the season, a pleasant change for the Cubs, who lost 10 straight starts behind the left-hander during one stretch last season.

Wood comes off a solid 2-1 win over the Cardinals, where he went 6 2/3 innings, allowing only five hits and striking out eight. He’s allowed two runs or less in six of his seven starts, and just three runs in the other start. In 13 innings pitched against the Rockies, Wood is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA over his career.

The Cubs have won four of their last six games, and have had the Rockies number at Wrigley Field. Since Oct. 1, 2006, the Cubs have won 14 of their last 18 home games against the Rockies.

Before the Cubs come-from-behind win Sunday at Washington, when Anthony Rizzo went 0-for-4, the slugging first-baseman had been hot, going 11-for-21 with seven RBIs in the five games prior. On Monday, the Cubs rewarded Rizzo with a seven-year, $41 million deal. On the season, Rizzo has hit .280 with nine home runs and 28 RBIs.

Rizzo and the Cubs’ lineup will try to get the job done today against Juan Nicasio (3-0, 4.72 ERA), who comes off a no-decision against the Yankees, where he lasted five innings and gave up two runs in a game the Rockies eventually lost, 3-2. Nicasio has made it into the sixth inning only once – his first start of the season – through seven starts this year.

We think the Cubs will keep their run of quality play going against a team whose struggles at the plate may continue. We’re confident Wood will keep performing well. The heart of the Rockies lineup – Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki – have only one hit in 14 at-bats against Wood for their careers. And Tulowitzki has hit only .204 at Wrigley Field, his lowest total in any NL park.

Monday’s selections:

Cubs (Wood) -120 vs. Rockies

Nationals (Zimmerman) -123 at Dodgers

Yankees (Nuno) +140 at Indians (Game 2)

Rangers/A’s OVER 8 (-110)

Season to date record: 69-52 (+1853)
