Toronto Maple Leafs @ Winnipeg Jets

The online sports book experts cannot explain it, but there is something promising about the Winnipeg Jets. Last season, the Jets battled for a playoff spot right down to the last couple of weeks of the season before fading away. Ever since the team moved to Winnipeg, it seems as though it has been getting better and better. There is good goaltending in Winnipeg and a strong ability to put the puck in the net. It is all starting to come together and the Jets fans are really seeing improvement in its team.

When Brian Burke arrived in Toronto as the general manager four years ago, he was hailed as a conquering hero. Four years later, he was run out of town on a rail. The betting sites note that Burke was fired as G.M., but he stayed in Toronto to advise the Leafs’ board of directors. Someone needs to start advising the Leafs on how to win two games in a row because that has been a difficult task for Toronto this season. The Maple Leafs is currently battling the Buffalo Sabres for the basement in the Northeast Division, and it is a heated battle to say the least.

Why the Jets Will Win

The Winnipeg Jets is 2-1-0 at home this season. While the season is still young, the sports betting experts point out that the Jets have looked very strong at home and has been using that momentum to try and move up the standings. While the Jets know that it needs to start winning road games if it wants to be a playoff contender, it still needs to maintain its dominance at home and help to keep those home fires burning when the late season playoff push comes around.

Why the Maple Leafs Will Win

Despite having a pretty horrible record in general, the Leafs still have a few potent scorers. Toronto is also seeing a resurgence from goaltender James Reimer who is trying to make up for a terrible season last year. But the Leafs cannot get any consistent scoring from its lines and the defense breaks down at the worst possible moments. Against a team like Winnipeg, all Toronto has to do is hold itself together for one game and it should be able to win. There is talent on this Toronto team. It just needs to learn how to win.

The Bottom Line

Winnipeg is building something special, but it needs to avoid the issues that plagued the Nashville Predators. Winnipeg needs to lock up its core players in long-term contracts and keep building on what it has. Toronto needs to start all over again from the beginning and build a winner around the core that it has. There is something to work with in Toronto, but first the team has to find someone who can make the pieces it has work together.

Pick Winnipeg Jets

Re: NHL Betting News and Notes Thursday, February 7

Thursday’s NHL Betting News and Notes
By Covers.com

Take a look at our quick-hitting betting notes for all 12 games on the NHL schedule Thursday.

Montreal at Buffalo (-122, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Peter Budaj (MTL), Ryan Miller (BUF)

The Buffalo Sabres are in a tailspin, losing their last three games and going winless in seven of their last eight. The Canadiens defeated Buffalo 6-1 in Montreal last Saturday, but will be playing the second half of a back-to-back tonight after falling 2-1 to the Bruins last night. The over is 5-0 in Bufallo’s last five games overall.

Tampa Bay at New Jersey (-123, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Anders Lindback (TBL), Martin Brodeur (NJD)

The Devils, seventh in penalty-killing and fifth in goals against, have beaten the Lightning in six of their last eight meetings. New Jersey has lost just once in regulation this season and allowed one goal over its last two contests. Tampa Bay is the best puckline bet in the league with a 7-2 ATS mark.

New York Islanders at New York Rangers (-153, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Evgeni Nabokov (NYI), Henrik Lundqvist (NYR)

The Rangers could get an emotional boost with the possible return of captain Ryan Callahan, who has missed the last three games with a left shoulder subluxation. Callahan went through a full practice Wednesday and said he has "no limitations" but did not commit to playing Thursday. The Rangers have won the last seven meetings at MSG, but the Islanders have cranked up their offense away from home, scoring 22 goals in five road games. The over is 8-1 in the last nine meetings.

Florida Panthers at Philadelphia Flyers (-144, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Jose Theordore (FLA), Ilya Bryzgalov (PHI)

The Flyers had their way with the Panthers in their first meeting, skating to a 7-1 rout in Sunrise, Fla. The Panthers will need to find some offense versus Philadelphia, which has won six of the last seven meetings. The road hasn't been kind for Kevin Dineen's club, which is just 1-3-1 away from the BankAtlantic Center. Jose Theodore yielded three goals on nine shots before receiving the early hook in the previous meeting versus Philadelphia. The under is 5-1 in Philadelphia’s last six home games.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-190, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Michal Neuvirth (WSH), Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT)

Pittsburgh has won four straight, and a 6-3 pasting of the Capitals at Washington on Sunday was an indication of how far apart these teams are. Washington has scored zero or one goal in 26 of 30 periods and no more than two in the other four. The Capitals are 0-6 in their last six road games dating back to last season.

Calgary Flames at Columbus Blue Jackets (-103, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Leland Irving (CGY), Sergei Bobrovsky (CBJ)

Flames netminder Miika Kiprusoff (MCL) is listed as day-to-day after leaving Tuesday’s win over the Red Wings, so Leland Irving will be between the pipes. The Blue Jackets’ 1.9 goals per game ranks 29th in the NHL, and they have scored three or more goals just twice this season. Columbus should be prepared for a close game as the past three matchups in the series have gone to a shootout. The under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings in Columbus.

Carolina Panthers at Ottawa Senators (-117, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Cam Ward (CAR), Craig Anderson (OTT)

Dan Ellis and the Hurricanes shut out the Ottawa Senators 1-0 in Carolina last Friday. Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson allowed more than two goals for the first time in nine starts this season when the Senators edged Buffalo 4-3 on Tuesday, improving to 4-0-1 at home. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Winnipeg Jets (-130, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: James Reimer (TOR), Ondrej Pavelec (WPG)

The Maple Leafs have enjoyed the road so far, posting a 4-1-0 record away from the Air Canada Centre, but the Jets have won three straight at home since losing their opener to Ottawa. Toronto lost both games it played in Winnipeg last season and the home team is 6-0 in the last six meetings.

Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues (-168, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Petr Mrazek (DET), Brian Elliott (STL)

The Central Division rivals meet for the third time this season tonight. After breezing to a convincing 6-0 season-opening triumph over Detroit, the St. Louis Blues received some payback from the Red Wings in the form of a 5-3 loss on Friday. Detroit is coming off a pair of losses to lowly Calgary and Columbus and the Red Wings are just 3-12 in their last 15 road games dating back to last season.

Los Angeles Kings at Nashville Predators (-104, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Jonathan Quick (LAK), Pekka Rinne (NSH)

The Kings suffered a 2-1 shootout loss at home to Nashville on Jan. 31 as Sergei Kostitsyn scored the decisive goal in the eighth round of the bonus format. Nashville returns home after going 4-2-1 on its franchise record-tying seven-game road trip that concluded with a 6-1 triumph over the Blues in St. Louis on Tuesday. Five of the Predators' first nine games have gone to the shootout, where they are 2-3. The under is 6-1 in Nashville’s last seven games overall.

Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild (+104, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Cory Schneider (VAN), Niklas Backstrom (MIN)

The Canucks, who have won three straight, sit in their familiar perch atop the Northwest Division - three points ahead of the Wild. But Cory Schneider is off to a slow start (2-2-0, 3.13 goals against average, .897 save percentage). Minnesota is 1-3-1 against playoff teams from last season and 3-1-0 against others. Vancouver won four of six meetings last season - with one of the victories in Minnesota - and has claimed seven of the last nine encounters. The under is 4-0 in the Wild’s last four games overall.

Chicago Blackhawks at Phoenix Coyotes (-103, 5)

Starting goaltenders: Corey Crawford (CHI), Mike Smith (PHX)

The league-leading Chicago Blackhawks attempt to extend their season-opening point streak to 11 games when they continue their six-game road trip against the Phoenix Coyotes. The Blackhawks are making their second visit this season to Phoenix, where they registered a 6-4 victory on Jan. 20. The Coyotes also are riding a point streak that reached five games with a 2-1 home win over the Minnesota Wild on Monday. Including the playoffs, the road team has won six in a row and eight of the last 10 meetings between the teams.
